Building a customer friendly online store for small business owners
Botiga is a hyperlocal marketplace app that helps small businesses create online stores and sell products to nearby communities. It provides easy product uploading, inventory management, payment processing, and sales tracking. Botiga also offers features like order management and access to new communities, helping businesses grow and reach more customers.

Discovery
In the discovery session, we gained insights about the business's vision, target audience's needs, problems, and behaviors. This helped us to understand the issues faced by merchants and customers.
We found that the target users were affluent people communities with high disposable income who value quality products and time savings. The merchants operate in various categories, including everyday groceries and specialized home decor, using WhatsApp groups to take orders and deliver them.
We identified several problems during the workshop.
01. Orders get missed when customers are not available for delivery or when they get lost in a pile of group messages.
02. Merchants use WhatsApp groups and traditional pen and paper to fulfils orders, which leaves no trail.
03. Revenue is affected by customer unavailability and cancellations of cash on delivery.
04. Scaling the business to new communities is a challenging task to manage.
Increase store engagement
Initially, in V1, the app had a store-first approach, where all available stores were listed in a view. However, user tests showed that users were not interested in browsing stores or reading their names, resulting in low engagement. The team iterated and improved the homepage by adding a visual image of store products, which significantly improved orders received by merchants and user engagement with the app.
Store management on the go
Small business owners primarily manage their operations on their phones and through WhatsApp groups. We simplified the sign-up and sign-in process with a mobile number and one-time password verification. We also kept the product forms simple and allowed them to easily toggle product visibility.
New communities are a tap away
Botiga helps small businesses reach new customers and save money on marketing. But since delivery dates differ for each community, we made our interface flexible so businesses can set their own delivery times and keep their customers happy.
Fixing order fullfilment
Businesses often fail to fulfill orders due to a lack of proper tracking, leading to a negative customer experience and loss of revenue. Our delivery system addresses this issue by sending everyday fulfillment orders to merchants at 1AM, allowing them to plan their day effectively and ensure that no orders are missed.
